Winter weather snow and ice increase the probability of road traffic accidents & breakdowns occurring.
There are several precautions you can make to decrease your chances.
- Plan you Journey – try and avoid small ungritted roads
- Extra Time – give yourself extra time of travel, rushing & speed leads to accidents
- Defrost vehicle- Make sure vehicle is fully defrosted before beginning travel, ensure full vision out of all windows and mirrors.
- Extra Distance between vehicles- Leaving extra room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front ensures that you have amble breaking distance when preforming an emergency stop.
- Reduce Speed- Ice, snow and speed are a bad combination. Reducing your speed will give your vehicle better control in icy conditions and reduce the risk of an accident
- Battery- Cold weather can affect older car batteries, resulting in breakdowns. It is recommended to replace car batteries after every five years.
- Anti-Freeze- Top up anti- freeze fluid in vehicle, this will protect your engine from corrosion and prevent water from freezing in pipes and water pumps.
- Snow Tyres- Changing into snow/ winter tyres will increase traction & breaking levels
- Phone & Phone charger – Always carry a phone and charger in your vehicle, so that you can call for help in the event of an accident or breakdown.
- Car emergency kit- Having an emergency kit in the vehicle is highly beneficial. Useful items to include: Mini first-aid kit, Jumper cables, mini tyre pump, flashlight, blanket and raincoat.
